Helen Matthews

After studying law at Cambridge I trained with a firm in the City covering all aspects of a large commercial practice. On qualifying (many moons ago) I joined the specialist Commercial Property Litigation Department where I acted for a number of big-name corporate clients. I was lucky enough to gain first class experience in all aspects of property litigation and dispute resolution. After six busy years I moved to an American firm also based in the City where I added banking litigation to my expertise.

I joined Bolt Burdon as Head of our new Commercial Property Litigation Department in November 2005. I cover the full range of contentious property matters including all landlord and tenant matters, forfeiture and possession, dilapidations, squatters’ proceedings, rent review, business lease renewal, arbitration and expert determination, development related disputes, mediation, boundary disputes, easements and rights of way, adverse possession, property-related professional negligence and insolvency, restrictive covenants, break clauses, surrender and termination of leases.

I also deal with various residential property matters including possession, rent arrears and enfranchisement.

I live and work in Islington and in my spare time I like to see as much as possible of my two grown-up daughters and their families who both live nearby. I also enjoy everything London has to offer including the theatre, comedy clubs and, most of all, eating out. I spend quite a few long weekends at my family home down in West Cornwall which is a tropical bird garden helping to save endangered species of parrot and other birds. My longer holidays are spent in more exotic places with my husband Nick who runs a private members' travel club.
