In order help with our fundraising we are, amongst other things, holding an online auction of three extraordinary lots:
The Match Day Experience pans out as follows:
The auction is on a “sealed-bids” basis. If you want to place a bid, all you do is send an email to NYCmarathon@boltburdon.co.uk making it clear which lot, or lots, you are bidding for and your maximum bid. The highest bidder for each lot will be notified by email on Wednesday 1st November.
"If you want to run a mile, then run a mile. If you want to experience another life, then run a marathon..."
Four times Olympic marathon champion -
Emil Zatopek
Last year Bolt Burdon took on the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge. This year we are breaking the pain barrier and taking on the New York Marathon. For those taking part, it is not just about the run on November 5th. The preceding months of committed, focussed, dogged training that each and every member of the team has to undertake, will push us to our limits both mentally and physically. Diets are changing, social lives are being disrupted, alcohol intake has been - er - adjusted, and some of us have even stopped (apart from the World Cup of course) watching TV altogether - such is the level of our commitment.
Zatopek was the best marathon runner the world has ever seen and when he states "if you put in trivial training, you get trivial results" we can be certain of one thing - he knows what he is talking about. With that in mind, an 'elite' team here at Bolt Burdon have begun training!
Our chosen charity is 'Get Kids Going', a national charity which offers disabled children and young people, the wonderful opportunity of participating in sport. We hope to raise in excess of £15,000 in support of the work that 'Get Kids Going' undertakes - enough to buy 5 sports wheelchairs. Now the largest marathon in the world with over 34,000 runners, the New York City Marathon boasts exceptional road race prestige, unrivalled by all but the London Marathon.
The course starts at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island. A military base for almost 200 years, athletes now wait to start among the giant fortifications built during the Civil War era. The course takes runners over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, the longest single-span suspension bridge in North America, and passes through all of New York City's five boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan, before finishing at Tavern on the Green in Central Park.
The classic 26.2 miles distance of the marathon is a huge achievement for everyone who accomplishes it - whether it be in 2½ hours or 8 hours. Barring injuries, we have all agreed that it is 'all for one and one for all' and we are all determined to finish!
We would ask that you please give as much as you can. Rest assured you know that between now and then there will be 8 very weary lawyers giving all they can in support of a very worthy and far reaching cause.
