Budget News reduced rate of inheritance tax for charitable donations

From 6 April 2012, the Government will introduce a reduced rate of inheritance tax of 36% for estates leaving 10% or more to charity. The current level of inheritance tax is 40%.

This is good news for charities and is sure to encourage those who have already a provisions in their Wills to charity to increase these to qualify for the 4% drop in tax on the rest of their estate.

But what of the others?

Well, cynically, you don’t have to be Carol Vorderman to quickly establish that no matter what the size of the estate you are not going to find a break even point where a 10% gift to charity will be equalled, or indeed exceeded, by the value to the rest of the estate inherited by the other beneficiaries at the reduced 36% tax.

As a headline, it does sound attractive and if nothing else it should raise the possibility of gifts to charity in the Will making public’s mind.
