Richard Woods

I am a Solicitor in the Wealth and Estate Planning Team with commercial and finance experience, and I am an Associate Member of Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (“STEP”) having passed both the Administration of Estates and Administration of Trusts papers.

I qualified in 2012 and practised as a commercial solicitor in the City, working predominantly in technology, ecommerce, consumer, and data protection. During that period I spent two years on secondment firstly at a multinational client specialising in digital and supply chain activities, and then as General Counsel to a professional membership organisation incorporated by Royal Charter.

I have advised many household names on their B2C and B2B arrangements, in particular as their business moved from physical to digital distribution, and the related complexities that arose with it (eg adapting to new consumer rights regulations, ensuring compliance with data protection legislation, and how to manage risk as clients became increasingly international in their reach).

During my time as a commercial solicitor I also worked closely with start-ups, advising in a mentor capacity candidates in the Accelerator Academy and start-ups looking for investment through the Oxford Investment Opportunity Network.

Before becoming a solicitor I worked in finance (in a non-legal capacity, with structured credit in prime brokerage, and then with structured products in risk management and then on the desk) and in financial publishing.

The reason why I moved into private client practice is that I wanted to work with people on matters that have a direct impact on them, providing guidance and advice concerning sensitive issues. Owing to the nature of some of the work, I became a Dementia Friend, and I am also a member of the Private Client Section of the Law Society. I have also presented to charities on how to encourage benefactors to leave legacies to them under their Wills, and drafted various articles (including for Colostomy UK’s publications, ‘Tidings’).

Outside of work, I love art (visiting galleries/exhibitions, and collecting it), cooking (I was a keen baker a long time before the Great British Bake Off was aired for the first time!), travelling (I have lived in Singapore and spent extended periods in India and South East Asia), and playing football.
